Cult Zine-Making at the V&A

Delivered as part of the V&A’s forthcoming Lost Venue’s exhibition exploring ‘lost’ performance spaces from the 1980s to 2010s, British Underground joined the V&A’s celebration of independent music culture through an engaging zine-making workshop linking underground music history, art and publishing.

We invited participants to design and produce their own DIY-style music magazines inspired by alternative publishing and grassroots scenes over the course of a dynamic two-hour workshop, capturing the spirit of underground music journalism by encouraging hands-on experimentation with collage, typography, storytelling and visual design.

Attendees engaged with the creative process, drawing inspiration from their own musical, political and artful interests helping build confidence through self-expression. Led by Team BU’s Crispin Parry MBE, Dr Daniel Ford, Almass Badat and Margarita Monaco, Create Your Own Cult Music Magazine was an experimental and hands-on session where music creativity and expression manifested in physical, unique zines.

As we see the evolution of live music, publishing and zine culture in 2026, creatively engaging, with audiences in culturally relevant and tangible methods prove effective in connecting  contemporary underground music with design culture.
